GMP10K GearPower Capacity Station Smartphones

GMP10K GearPower Capacity Station Smartphones

Can't recommend this enough! Knowing I had a cross-country plane flight from GA to CA and a 10 hour, one-way bus ride to DC from GA chaperoning a field trip during the past month, I purchased this power station in preparation for my trips. Worth every dime. I used it continually on a 4+ hour plane flight to charge Droid Razr and Kindle Fire. Both were maxed out at full charges and used throughout the trip on inflight wi-fi and the charger still had days worth of juice to burn. Did the same during the day-long bus ride to DC. Again, both devices kept fully charged. Was on foot for hours a day, multiple days in DC walking the Mall, WH, Smithsonian museums, etc. constantly taking pics, video, texting pics, using the network on my Razr. Kept the unit in my back pocket or inside coat pocket to touch up my battery when needed. Again, worked like a charm. Personally, I don't think it's too heavy or cumbersome as some describe. It charges my phone as quickly as plugging it directly into the wall. While everyone on the bus trip was queuing up to charge their phones on the two outlets at the front of the bus, I could happily relax with fully charged devices. By the end of the trip, everyone wanted to know the name of the unit so they could buy one.

  1. Easy setup and usage at a low price for charging my iPad and iPhone on planes. I really love it.

  2. I travel fairly often and I like to keep my two smart phones (personal and business) and iPad Mini as charged as possible. Yes, it's sort of an obsession, but I like knowing I can connect when I need to. This is made all the more challenging in most airports, where access to 120v outlets is at a premium. The charging stations at some airports (e.g. LAX) attract travelers like a desert oasis, but there are never enough outlets to serve the people who need them, sometimes they're broken, and often they're not close to my gate. Wall outlets are practically non-existent at many large airports.

For years I used a Callpod Fueltank Duo. For the most part, I liked it. However, Callpod uses a proprietary connector for its device cables, so you have to buy one of their cables for each type of device you have. At about $10 each, that added significantly to the Fueltank's cost. Plus, they're easy to lose (trust me), compounding the expense. Finally, you have to use Callpod's power brick to charge the Fueltank. Altogether it is a usable but clumsy system. When I lost a micro-USB cable for the second time I decided it was time to switch.

Enter the IOGear 10K. No special AC adapter is needed; any USB brick will charge it. It comes with a micro-USB cable for charging the 10K itself or a compatible device, and its own USB brick, although most of us have several already. Likewise, any USB charging cable (micro, mini, Apple, Lightning) works with it to charge your devices. Plus, it has 1A and 2.1A outlets, so you can charge a phone and full-sized tablet at the same time. (My Mini will charge with either port.)

It is bigger and heavier than a smartphone, so it's not a pocket item, but you wouldn't expect to do that anyway. It comes with a nice cloth bag. The 10K itself is very nicely constructed of sturdy plastic with one micro-USB input port and two output ports. There is a single button for getting an estimate of the amount of power left, using a four-bar LED display. I usually charge my phone while I'm flying, since I can't really use it. I have not discharged my phone to 20-30% and then timed how long it takes to recharge my phone, so I can't give you those estimates. It has easily topped off a half-discharged Droid Incredible 2 in about an hour. In terms of capacity, it can get me through a cross-country trip with a couple of connections and lots of phone use without difficulty.

At just over $50, this is a must-have item for the frequent flyer. It's small, powerful, and convenient to charge and use.

  3. This unit won't quit like other unit do when you plug in a full size tablet. Will charge a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and a Galaxy S3 phone simultaneously without any problems. Hope they make a 20,000 mAh unit soon. But like this one as it is.

  4. I have had this for over a month and have consistently charged my iphone with it, and I have yet to recharge the power station. It is very sleek, well manufactured and completely reliable as a backup mobile power source.

  5. The thing performs exactly as described, and even better. I use my phone a lot in the field for calling in birds and this back-up battery keeps my phone apps going as long as I want.

I totally recommend this battery back-up to friends.

  6. This product is small and packs a lot of power. Everything was as advertised. It takes awhile to get fully charged but once charged, it has enough power to charge a cell phone multiple times and a tablet.

  9. I got this with the idea of taking this with me everywhere and charging my cell phone (Samsung Galaxy S2) and tablet (ASUS Transformer TF201), especially while I'm at school and work. I am able to go days without needing to recharge this (the battery is good for about 10 charges with my phone by itself). It is small enough to fit in a pocket, though I wouldn't recommend that due to the fact it is a bit on the heavy side. I would say this is a great product at a great price, and would recommend for anyone to buy.
