One of the best cases for the Samsung Galaxy S3!!

Otterbox Defender for Samsung Galaxy S3 - Boom Purple

This Defender is the case and holster combination. Although the Galaxy S3 is already a fairly large smartphone, the Defender adds some additional bulk to the phone. My co-workers exclaimed that the S3 was already too big and they refused to consider the Otterbox Defender. However, I have fairly large hands and felt that if Samsung desired it, the S3 could be about half an inch larger in the screen and it would still fit my hand perfectly.

The Defender uses a polycarbonate chassis to secure the phone, and then a silicone wrap covers the chassis. The silicone is actually a very smooth surface that is not tacky/sticky so dust doesn't get attracted to the material. There are 2 flaps that cover the headphone port and USB port, but this is not a waterproof case.

The volume button is harder to use with the Defender, but the power button is not that bad. There is a 1/8" thick ledge that surrounds the screen for added impact protection, but this ledge also makes it harder to use the home button.

The dark purple silicone wrap and the lighter purple chassis looks high quality in person.

The built-in screen protector is not anti-glare, but it covers all of the S3's display leaving 2 holes for the home button, and the front facing camera, earpiece, and other visual sensors. I have heard rumors that grit/dirt trapped under the protector will scratch up the display. The glare isn't very bad, although it will be present.

Most docks won't work with the Defender, but I haven't had an issue with the USB charging cable. It even works with my universal smartphone car mount. The holster is very well made with a solid chassis and positively-clicking swivel. I don't like the kickstand design, it feels kind of flimsy but comes in handy. I think I impressed a co-worker when her dock could only keep her S3 mode upright, while my holster kickstand could allow the phone to be charged in landscape mode while I watched a movie.

With the holster on my belt, the S3 and Otterbox Defender feel HUGE. It can be cumbersome to wear and use, it feels like I am calling in an airstrike whenever I use the phone. But like I said before, my hands are large enough to grip the phone and use it one-handed without any problems. I normally wear size Large gloves (Mechanix, Alpinestars GP Pro motorcycle racing gloves) although Medium fits just as well.

Overall: 5/5 stars, outstanding craftsmanship, great reputation for customer service, probably the BEST holster/case combination for any smartphone. I would have bought one for my Droid2 if they made the Defender holster combo for that phone. If you have a Samsung Galaxy S3, I seriously recommend considering the Otterbox Defender. For the ladies that can toss the S3 in a purse, the Commuter or Incipio is probably a much better alternative. For the guys that use holsters, look no farther than the Otterbox Defender.
